I’ve gone through and recorded how many lines of dialogue each character has during the class trials of the three main games. But first...
An Explanation
(feel free to skip if you're only interested in the stats)
Here’s what is and isn’t included.
Included: All normal, white text, voiced lines of dialogue during the trial. This includes the closing argument as well. In V3, unlike the first two games, the vote takes place before the results screen. So to even things out, I counted through both the trial results screen and the vote for all three games. It’s normally cut and dry, but for 2-6, I counted the “vote” as when everyone pressed the button.
Not counted: Anything that takes place after the results
screen and vote (normally where the culprit explains why they did it). Those
lines are after the trial is over, and except for the finales, usually aren’t
voiced.
Not counted: Blue lines, used to represent the protagonist’s
thinking. These are never voiced, except for a certain segment in 3-1 between
Kaede and Shuichi. I didn’t count that because it wasn’t actually happening; it
was more of a symbolic, unspoken conversation.
Included: All “…” lines. As you might imagine, there are a
ton of these. My thinking is, they’re written in white, plus they show the
character and cause you to focus on them... it makes sense to include them. A lot of times,
they’re used to show that the characters have something that they know about
and aren’t willing to say just yet (like Fuyuhiko in 2-2, or Maki in 3-5). So
in other words, they are important lines despite not including any words.
Not counted: Any flashbacks or previously unseen footage.
The latter mainly occurs during 3-5 and 3-6. Although those scenes are voiced,
I don’t consider them part of the trial since they’re not happening “live.”
Included: All of the crazy stuff from 2-6: the fake Makoto,
the island debate with all the characters, the conversations with Chiaki, the
multiple Izuru Kamukura debate. Since none of the game’s characters are truly
real, it didn’t make sense to exclude any of them. I could see an argument for
excluding the island debate and Chiaki parts. But it’s hard to say ‘that part’s
only in Hajime’s head’ when so much other bizarre stuff is happening all around them.
Included: All lines from the non-stop debates, rebuttal
showdowns, mass panic debates, and debate scrums. Only the correct answers were chosen to the questions (including the choice in 1-5). None of the backroutes were taken in V3.
Not included: Rhythm game sections, as well as any other voiced
lines that aren’t displayed in text on the bottom of the screen (such as all
the protagonist’s remarks after selecting something, or a character
interrupting for the rebuttal showdown).
Fascinating Conclusions
#1) First of all, one thing that absolutely blew my mind. In Danganronpa 1, you refute the other ultimates a grand total of 58 times throughout the game’s six class trials. By the end, you’ve shot down so many yellow statements from your fellow survivors – Yasuhiro, 15 times. Aoi, 9 times. Byakuya and Toko, 8 times apiece. But throughout the whole thing, there’s one character that’s never wrong: Kyoko. You’ve never had to refute any of her arguments. Not a single one, even though you’ve had 12 opportunities. That is, until the last line of the very last non-stop debate, at the end of the game to restore her hope. By doing something you haven’t done before, it makes the final moments feel more significant.
Did you realize that while you were playing it? Not only that, they did it again in Danganronpa 2. You never refute a single Chiaki statement through the first five trials. It’s only in the last trial after she’s already dead, in the fantasy ‘island debate’ scene, that you’ll attack her yellow words to break out of that delusion. It’s a bit different because Chiaki’s leading you to the right answer, but it’s a similar dynamic - that's the one and only time you refute her.
It’s more of the same in Danganronpa V3. You never have to refute or consent with anything Tsumugi says until the last trial, when you accuse her of being the mastermind, busting through her alibi. Starting in the first trial, they tried to hide her as much as possible. She didn’t have the fewest lines there (they did have to explain the whole cospox thing), but she did have exactly zero non-stop debate lines. That’s the only time in any trial that an ultimate had none of those (not including protagonists). She then proceeded to rank last in total lines among ultimates for trials 2-3-4, and only missed on being last for trial 5 by one line. That's just plain invisible! It's great that these games were able to utilize their mechanics like this.
#2) In both DR2 & DRV3,the first trial was quite revealing in terms of who would survive. Both games had five characters alive going into the final trial. Both times, not including the main characters, the other four were at the bottom of the ranking for lines in the first trial. It doesn't hold up for DR1, though. This is the kind of thing that I'll be thinking about if there's ever a Danganronpa 4. Check this out:

#3) The protagonist almost always ends up with the most lines in any given trial (mostly because of the lengthy closing arguments, which usually adds a good 50 or so to their total). However, there's still been five times when that wasn't the case. Three of those are the final trials of each game, with the villain leading (Junko, Junko, Tsumugi). The other two times are Nagito (2-1) and Kokichi (3-4).
#4) Looking at the first game's stats, one thing that it makes you realize is that the cast is basically split into two halves. The same seven people are there for the last three trials, because of the outcome of 1-4 and the abbreviated trial in 1-5. You end up knowing one half of the group way better than the rest.
#5) Sonia is the queen of consenting! You end up agreeing with her blue statements a total of five times in DR2. Nobody else has more than two, and that goes for V3 too. The most refutes is easily Yasuhiro (15, out of 25 possible). Several characters are at a 100% refute rating: Chihiro (1/1), Hajime (11/11), Mahiru (2/2), Nekomaru (2/2), Monokid (1/1), and Shuichi (1/1). Hajime's weird numbers are because they're from the Izuru Kamukura part in 2-6.
#6) On the other hand, some characters were never refuted! The shortlist of those ultimates includes Hifumi (0/0 - that's crazy too), Kiyotaka (0/4), and Sakura (0/4) from DR1, and Ibuki (0/5) from DR2 (plus a few more non-ultimates). Makoto from DR1 was also never refuted, as you memorize his only yellow line from that game. However, the fake Makoto from DR2 and the cosplay Makoto from DRV3 were both refuted, if you choose to count either of those (I wouldn't). You could also count the Imposter from DR2 in that group, based on his one line from 2-6.
#7) Which character has the most ellipses (... Lines)? I've calculated a top ten list:
1 | Shuichi | V3 | 87 | 4.3% |
2 | Hajime | 2 | 66 | 5.2% |
3 | Chiaki | 2 | 40 | 6.9% |
4 | Maki | V3 | 39 | 6.2% |
5 | Kaito | V3 | 35 | 4.7% |
6 | Kyoko | 1 | 27 | 4.4% |
6 | Makoto | 1 | 27 | 2.4% |
8 | Himiko | V3 | 26 | 4.2% |
9 | K1-B0 | V3 | 21 | 3.8% |
10 | Junko | 1 | 20 | 3.1% |
Shuichi is a clear #1, followed by Hajime in a strong second with Chiaki barely pulling out third. However, the percentages do matter here, because as you'll read below, each game continues to have longer and longer trials (the percentages here are out of their total lines). So by that measure, Hajime has more than Makoto or Shuichi. By the way, this list would look totally different if ordered by percentage, because then the top three would be Monodam (16.7%), Monomi (9.1%), and Kaede (9.0%)!
#8) Several characters "punched above their weight" in the rankings for each game. By that, I mean that they finished ahead of characters who participated in more trials than they did. Nobody did it in DR1, but in DR2 Nagito had more lines than any of the non-Hajime surivors, while Teruteru also had more lines than Nekomaru and Ibuki despite one fewer trial. In DRV3, Kaito/Kokichi/Korekiyo/Kaede all finished ahead of characters with more trials. It's interesting how there was more of that as the series went on.
#9) As you might imagine, the culprits usually are among the leaders for each trial in spoken lines. Only twice have they finished outside of the top three. Mondo was 9th in 1-2, which really stands out; that one did come out of nowhere near the end. The other is Gonta, who was 4th in 3-4. The killers being at the top is obvious, right? My next thought was, where did they rank before the culprit was guessed? How many of them were "hiding" during the trial?
Culprit Line Rankings - Final & before being guessed (out of ultimates only)
Final | Before | |||
1-1 | Leon | 3 | 8 | |
1-2 | Mondo | 9 | 11 | last |
1-3 | Celestia | 2 | 2 | |
1-4 | Sakura | xxx | xxx | |
1-5 | xxx | xxx | xxx | |
1-6 | Junko | 1 | 2 | |
2-1 | Teruteru | 3 | 5 | |
2-2 | Peko | 2 | 6 | |
2-3 | Mikan | 3 | 9 | last |
2-4 | Gundham | 3 | 8 | last |
2-5 | Chiaki | 2 | 2 | |
2-6 | xxx | xxx | xxx | |
3-1 | Kaede | 2 | 1 | |
3-2 | Kirumi | 2 | 5 | |
3-3 | Korekiyo | 2 | 4 | (first guess) |
3-4 | Gonta | 4 | 4 | either way |
3-5 | Kaito | 2 | 3 | |
3-6 | Tsumugi | 1 | 2 |
Mondo, Mikan, and Gundham all ranked last in lines before that moment. You can definitely say that they were hiding. I'd say Leon as well. For Gonta, "either way" means either the moment where Kokichi said he was the culprit, or the official guess - he ranked 4th at both points. So out of 16 cases, there's only 4 where the killer tried to avoid being the center of attention. That's less than I expected. Though, this isn't perfect since some of the guesses don't happen until they're foregone conclusions (like in 3-6).

Trial 6 | 1321 | 1331 | 2020 |
Total | 4,973 | 6,478 | 8,549 |
The number of lines increased by 30.3% from 1-2, and 32.0% from 2-V3.
In all 3 games, the last trial had the most lines. Also, the second trial was always longer than the first, with a decrease in the third trial and an increase in the fourth. Interesting that the third trials were shorter despite the double murders.

All Monokuma lines are credited to Junko. Her number of yellows is highly affected by that one debate where every dead character is listed.
Overall, Toko's lines are closely split between her and Genocide Jack. The breakdown is 217 vs 194. She's only Toko in 1-1 & 1-5, and only Jack in 1-3. The other three have both.

All Monokuma lines and the fake Makoto in 2-6 are credited to Junko. Although technically I could call it “virus” or something, it seems easier just to call it Junko. Her lines in 2-6 are split as follows: 336-Junko, 88-Fake Makoto, 86-Monokuma.
No one will relate to this, but... I just want to say that it was more difficult to track this data in the second game due to the lack of the little squares during the debates for each person's line (1 & V3 both have them). This was especially true during the rebuttals, where it's tricky to tell what constitutes one line - sometimes a sentence will be split up as it goes across the screen. A few times, I had to count based on the character sprites changing to figure it out.

All cosplays from 3-6 are credited to Tsumugi. Her lines are broken down: 256-Tsumugi, 116-Junko, 214-Others. Of those other characters, the most frequently seen is Makoto (14), with Chiaki/Hajime/Kyoko/Nagito/Yasuhiro also getting 10+ lines. Akane/Imposter are the least seen with 4 each (not counting the absent Mukuro, of course).
All Exisal lines from 3-5 are credited to Kaito. They break down: 232-Exisal Kokichi, 24-Exisal Kaito, 11-Kaito, and 5-Exisal (not named as either). So it's Kokichi's voice you're hearing 85% of the time, even though he gets zero credit in the stats for it.

Oh wow! It must have been really tedious counting all those text boxes, especially for those debate boxes you mentioned in the second game!
I'm sure this will come in handy for anyone making fan games to know how they should make the trials. Thank you!
omg literally thank you so much! I'm making a fangame and these statistics are like invaluable to me, I know this probably took forever to put together so thank you so much :D
